new features added to the journal
after trying several different weblogging services, i finally settled on Blogger and got it working this morning. in the sidebar, you'll now be able to do things like find recent journal entries, email an entry to yourself or a friend, and subscribe to the journal with newsreaders that support RSS or Atom. please feel welcome to leave your comments below.
why have a journal? for one, i'd love to have a way to easily share my experiences with friends, old and new ~ while in Europe this summer, at the coffeeshop tomorrow, and travelling through Mongolia next year. two, by having an an online journal i hope to use the medium in ways that spiritualize a technology that i believe can be easily considered both soulless on one end and egomaniacal on the other. and three, it's been years since i've had a website and i'm having fun learning what new tools and languages are available.
and why Blogger? it turns out that Greymatter is too limited for what i want (it doesn't post via email or do RSS out of the box), and creating a custom template for WordPress would have taken me quite some time (though it was a snap to install and a joy to use). i'm not thrilled about using an external service, but i found it to be much easier to simply insert the tags that blogger uses directly into my own web template.
in spite of blogger's usefulness, i can't stand the word "blog" at all. i feel as though i've been tricked into saying it by using a service with the word in their name... ugh!
